Laptop care and maintenance

I have a thought after seeing a post by Ubuysa linked to in another thread (https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?25211-Optimus-IV-removing-the-wireless-card), it includes his pictures of an Optimus IV with back off and explains some maintenance.

Among the regular forum users we probably have most of the laptops PCS do. Would it be worth posting similar pictures and instructions as a guide for other users or new members. Perhaps a new section "Laptop Maintenance" could be added to the fora. There are a lot of helpful users on these fora and it should be possible to put together some useful guides.

Sounds like a good idea! I'm happy to send in more pictures of the Optimus IV with the covers off....

I would advise caution. The last thing you want to do is end up a target of blame when a new PCS PC owner with the fine motor skills of a toddler toasts their PC following one of our guides. I am fully behind the idea by the way and I would happily provide information based on my Octane III, I would just clear it with PCS themselves and make sure everyone is aware of the potential pitfalls.

I know it's straightforward to add an "at your own risk" caution at the start of a post/thread but that just doesn't quite cut it nowadays.

Couldn't you make that argument for any of the advice we give on here?

so long as you put a big fat disclaimer in bold red font with multiple exclamation marks at the end i think it will be fine!!!

I will create one for the defiance 3 if I get round to it. But it should be made obvious that said maintenance are not for beginners because this is a PCS owned forum.

It depends where it stops. Most of the advice on here is regarding specs of machines, how to install softwares etc. Tear down of warranty parts is a bit of a grey area IMO, it's obviously fine for the likes of youtube and independent forums, I would just be careful given that it's owned by PCS and any warranty claims as a result of information given here could cause hassle.

You make a good point. I'm not a lawyer but I think the issue of liability is covered in the existing forum rules. They specifically state that...

The forum is provided “as is” and is considered privileged

PC Specialist Ltd cannot be held responsible for the content contained within the site and the opinions expressed within are not necessarily those of PC Specialist Ltd

You agree that no legal action, past, present or future, will be taken against PC Specialist Ltd in relation to your dealings with the site or people on the site

...which is very much a 'you use the information in these fora at your own risk' requirement of membership.

Yeah I suppose that just about covers it then. As I said, I'm all for it... I just wouldn't want anyone, specifically mods & organisers, to get into any trouble regarding it.
