Latest AMD recoil laptops

Hi,

So I scored a new remote work anywhere job, so I am going to become more mobile shortly. I currently have a work provided Mac which is great for work, but if I just buy text expander for windows I can be just as efficient.

So now I want to get a gaming laptop. I've being eyeing up the new MSI which comes with Either a 2kIPS or 4k mini LED, 32GB of 6400 ddr5, gen 5 nvme ssd and a 5080 and 9955hx3d CPU.

Now I have a prebuilt gaming rig from PC specialist I am overall very happy with so I am considering one of their laptops instead.

One plus for PC specialist is the mini led option on the 16inch vs the IPS of the MSI, as 4k is too much for the machine realistically and I personally dislike DLSS.

On the other hand the MSI has 6400mhz ram which should result in a performance bump albeit only about 10% over the PC specialist.

Is anyone able to chime in on the build quality of the latest 2025 PC Specialist rigs? Their ports, chassis quality, thermal performance etc etc.

The 16” AMD Recoil with a 5080 or 5090 requires to be used with the modular external water cooler, just so you’re aware of that. Without it both the GPU and CPU would thermal throttle

The mobile 5090 is very much the same GPU as the 5080 simply with more VRAM so not really beneficial for gaming, it’s more for creative workloads like image rendering or video editing.

The 4k panels are more for creatives also, pointless for gaming on such a small screen

From 5600MHz RAM to 6400MHz is a very minimal gain for gaming, over 6000MHz is largely unnoticeable so don’t think that would be any cause to affect purchasing decision

Hi,

I see,so are you saying unlike the MSI, I would have to plug it into a water cooler if I want to use it? I can't just put it in a table plug in the charger and use it? I'm looking at the 5080 model. Obviously water cooling would be better but the MSI does not require it to play games at good performance.

The Recoil will outperform the MSI, it’s the most powerful laptop on the market, but does require the water cooler

I don't see how it will massively outperform it with the same GPU and CPU but slower ram. Unless thermals are awful on the MSI but from what I've read it's a very good performer and does not require a water cooler, effectively relegating it to a desktop machine. That's very disappointing to hear. I will be working abroad quite a bit so wanted a laptop I can just put in the table plug in and work/game on. Like your usual gaming laptop. So quite disappointed to hear that water cooler is mandatory.

Likely not gonna be the best option then. It’s a desktop replacement rather than a laptop, it’s not designed to be portable

I expect that it would be a close match to the MSI on air cooling but significantly outperform it on water.
That's what I was thinking tbh, but blessed squirrel is saying the opposite. So now idk.

For the record I would much rather go PCSpecialist, despite the slower memory (I have seen benches showing 0-10% perf difference dependant on game).

I just need to know if it will be around as good on air and not the must have water cooler desktop only replacement squirrel is saying.

That would be for 4800MHz, not 5600MHz, it’s about 2-5%

It's not exact science but I can't see major flaws. 1% lows see a decent increase.

Also RE what you said, you said you need the water cooler with it as it's a desktop replacement. To me that sounded like you can only use it water cooled, at least when gaming.

Maybe that is not what you intended but it is how I personally took it.

It would also be heavily reliant on the ability to change the CPU's PLs and the GPU version used: the 5080 laptop has a changeable TGP ranging from 80 to 150W.

Custom laptops typically provide more freedom in this area.
Yea, I think the MSI is set to 175w.

I guess I'd need to email PC specialist about what wattage the 5080 can max out at?

It’s 150w max, that’s the GPU alone
Yea. MSI has a 25 watt boost option to get it up to 175 but I'm not sure if the performance gain from that is actually worth the extra wattage, probably just marketing BS.

Looks like PC specialist use the same setup XMG does in terms of chassis and a few other things so it should be fine on air. I will probably Still buy the water cooler anyway. For specific situations.

Will be sorting out an order end of this month. Probably with PC Specialist as the XMG chassis is identical and seems to be a solid performer.

Would love to know PC Specialists setup in terms of thermals.

MSI has 2 decent fans and 6 heat pipes. Would love to see what PCS does

That is Dynamic Boost: while not required, the CPU and GPU can share a little amount of power to modestly boost performance.

NVIDIA's claimed TGP ranges from 80 to 150 watts, with an additional 25 watts for Dynamic Boost 2.0 to boost performances in-game up to 16%.

In real life, you might see a 5% gain, probably less. 😅

The Recoil 16's both the 5080 and 5090 also have the same 150w + 25w boost.

They also don't thermal throttle much without the Water cooler, They can get hot under heavy loads, just like other high end laptops. but the Watercooler isn't a necessity, its more of an addition and you'll get marginally better performance and low temps with it. But I must reiterate, the laptop wont perform worse than most others without the watercooler.

With the MSI having 6400MT/s ram speeds, isn't that an intel CPU? You could also get the Intel from PCS and get 6400MT/s RAM (you'd have to fit it yourself though).

The Prebuilt Intel Recoil 16 is currently on offer, that's the one I have.

Hi,

It's actual the AMDs too. I'll go with PCS if it won't throttle. Only reason I'm going with AMD 9955hx3d is I've seen comparisons with the Intel equivalent with same GPU and the AMD is getting significantly better lows. The memory speed boost also further boosts that. I guess I could see if any faster memory is compatible myself. That would not void the warranty but naturally PCS can only support the spec they sell.

I'm really sold on the AMD tbh the 1% lows are so much better due to the cache

The AMD 9955HX3D doesn't support over 5600MT/s RAM, so you could only get faster by overclocking.
it does have much better 1% lows though

Ah that's the bit of information I missed. OK that solves everything then. PCS it is, MSI must be OCing the RAM.

Any good laptop cooling stands? They are all OOS at PCS ATM.

I can put an order in when I get paid end of month. 1600p screen and mini led a lone makes it superior tbh. 4k is too much for these specs.

Might just replace the ram with the same 6400 XMG use, as they also use 6400.
