Speaking with Faber, Decoder host and Verge Editor-in-Chief Nilay Patel suggested that a "forever mouse" could cost $200. While that would be expensive compared to the typical mouse, such a product wouldn't be the first software-heavy, three-figure-price computer mouse. Still, a price tag of around $200 would limit the audience to professionals or enthusiasts

But anyone who understands any hardware would never be gaslighted by that marketing.

Any hardware product is limited by that hardware generation, which would be a laser mouse at whatever high DPI they could factor in for the cost. A high portion of this mouse’s cost will be purely towards software development.

Doesn't matter how great the software is, if the technology leaps past 20,000 dpi, or away from laser to something far more effective, or day I say it, away from mice entirely to gesture controls such as in a VR experience, then that mouse is instantly dated.

Unless they do in fact make the switches and sensor modular, that would be pretty sweet but that doesn’t seem to be their aim

I've not had a chance to listen to the interview so won't comment on what was said. But the PC Gamer article made an interesting comparison to the rental housing market (in the context of subscriptions for physical things)... Whilst although hopefully its obvious to all, a mouse and a house are not one and the same, I do think there's a trend (maybe its just a 'push' from corporations) for the subscription model to be adopted across 'all things' (more subs more $£s right)

We will own nothing and be happy. Maybe Ida Auken is right?

I already have a 'forever mouse' subscription...but I pre-load by buying 3 Logitech MX Master mice whenever they're on offer for £30 on Amazon Prime Day(s).

It sounds like a lot, but I have 3 computers that have one each, and have family who are always needing another mouse, so this is cheaper & better then pointing them at the £5 e-waste in the Lidl Middle aisle.

Just picked up an MX3S Master, really nice mouse. That was to replace my Razer one which catastrophically failed about a month after the warranty expired, and was not happy with that.
