Wait, you're pairing an R3 2300G with a GTX 1080?

Did your old PC explode? Otherwise it seems unlikely this system is an upgrade worth spending any money on.

Yeah, I was worried that this CPU would impact on the GPU negatively. And yeah, old PC essentially exploded and even if it didn't, I was planning to get rid of it soon anyway considering it was a practically ancient hand-me-down from a friend with the only good parts being the PSU and the 1080 he put in. I was thinking about going with a Ryzen 5 2600X instead of the 3 but the cost factor held me back a bit.

I assume you've tested / had your friend test the GPU and PSU to ensure they do still work. coz that'd be unfortunate!

Go with the R5 2600 at the very least for its 6 cores (and 12 threads). It's a fine gaming CPU. While the R3 2200 is very budget level and will make you want to replace the whole show a lot sooner.

Also, 2x8gb 2933MHz RAM. Faster RAM can matter a lot in some games, and Ryzen CPUs benefit from it more generally too due to their architecture as I understand it. Same with dual channel RAM.

IF PCS don't offer that option, buy 1x4gb and source and install your own.

1x16gb slow RAM is double-nerfing the system :)

Ideally the Fractal Focus G as it's a better budget level gaming case.

Yeah, I gave my friend the PSU and GPU and they still worked fine, lucky too because I would've been out of a 1080 that was practically free.

I think I can take the wallet-hit for the R5 2600, at least that way it's a good investment that won't make me want to replace it anytime soon.

Thanks for the advice on the RAM and everything else, much appreciated!
