I got a free copy of Windows for being a student so don't need that. Sadly I have to use Windows 8 due to software I'm going to be using but its cool. I'm doing a games programming course as well Thanks.:)

EDIT: Its £712 and I can't really afford to go much higher unless really necessary.

Can you afford the i7-4710mq? I know that if you get the 15.6" version then you can get it about £10 cheaper than your build with the i7-4710mq inside it.

Also, go for the 750GB WD Scorpio Black, the hybrid drives aren't great and typically only contain an 8GB SSD which isn't that useful.

I'd go for this, which is £690 for the 15.6" or £757 for the 17.3" (the one I've posted is for the 15.6"):

Thanks for the feedback, although I could drop the 17" screen, I think I would prefer to keep it. I was definitely tempted by i7 as its not too much extra, this was my most likely upgrade I think before purchase.

I have had experience with a hybrid drive and I have one in my main PC with 12GB SSD on it and I noticed some nice improvements over my standard HDD. I don't run the OS from it but some games there was a couple of seconds difference. Also the extra 250GB storage is nice as I have a lot of games and ripped DVDs (over 2TB all together so I will be making cuts as it is).

Thanks for the feedback, thinking on it I'm probably going to stretch to the i7, over time I think it would pay off. Even if it does put me quite a bit over what I originally wanted to pay :(

And here is a benchmark showing the kind of improvement for frequently accessed data on the hybrid

The hybrids in laptops tend to contain the smaller SSDs than the desktop ones. The boot time on them may be faster, but anything that isn't in the SSD will be slower when loading as they have 5400rpm drives as opposed to the 7200rpm the scorpio black has. Personally I'd prefer a quicker system all around than slightly quicker boot speeds and on a couple of programs and the rest of it being a load slower.

Also, the i7 will definitely be worth it, it's not a load more money, around £50 I think? And for that price it's a no-brainer really.

Just a suggestion, if you're getting this for portability at uni then why get a 17.3"? It's not that portable, it weighs 3.1kg as opposed to the 15.6" which weighs 2.4kg. The 15.6" weighs less, takes up less space and is cheaper! Anway, I guess it comes down to what you want :)

I'm happy with the hybrid I think there will be a few core programs that I will constantly be going back to (Visual studio, Unity etc) that are often slow to load.

And most of the time the laptop will be static and hooked up to a second monitor so the weight isn't a big factor, my classes will be fully equipped with top computers etc and my course contains very few proper lectures. :)

I'd try and get a model that allows two 2.5inch drives. Go for a same 60-120gb ssd, they are pretty cheap nowdays. Then use a 500gb hybrid drive.

That looks better, 15.6" screen is perfectly fine to work on and you save some money, only thing I would add is the killer wifi card, other than that it looks great :)

I'll be on ethernet almost all the time and when im not it will probably be tethered through my phone.

I'm gonna look at some laptops in PC world on wednesday just for size comparison as I'm used to working on 2 24" screens

Why not get an mSata drive and HDD, that way you can keep the DVD drive :)

I did look at that, but 120GB mSATA is about £50 more expensive otherwise I would have gone for it. Luckily I rarely use my DVD drive on my desktop and I can use that when I want to rip my CDs. If it does become necessary then I'll have to pickup an external one.

EDIT: Oh wait, the Kingston mSATA one is only a tenner extra, plus £4 for the DVD drive, so £727 total. I can live with that :)

Fair enough, thinking about grabbing an msata SSD from amazon for my laptop as it's cheaper. Was just gonna get a 60gb Kingston SSD for £40 and stick windows on it :)

Check the edit of my previous incase you didnt see it :)

Ah right, only updated once I posted it I think. Yeah, for £10 extra you can save the DVD drive which could be useful if you need to reinstall windows or anything :D

Got mine now and it's great considering the price, probably gonna do a review of it tomorrow since I've had it over a week now :)

Its a good value laptop at the moment especially with the Optimus being stuck on the 765M which costs more and has the same power as the 850M. Only thing that's a tad annoying is that it is DDR3 but I can survive with that.

Exactly my thoughts :) The DDR3 doesn't seem to change much, can play titanfall on high at 45fps and bf4 on high at 30fps, which considering the price, weight and power consumption is pretty good. The only game I seem to not be able to run well is AC4, which can only run at around 30fps on medium for some reason, might be to do with the DDR3 but I'm not sure, it just seems to hate the laptop for some reason :L

I was originally gonna get the Optimus but realized that the Cosmos beat it in nearly every way since it's got the newer card in it.
