New Laptop Purchase

You had me worried for a minute !
The keyboard and mouse I have ordered are integrated not extra (I hope anyway) .
I would have preferred not to order the 'Office' option as we already have a full version of it but there didn't seem to be an option to order without it ?

As for the HD options, I have gone with Finn's suggestions , which have actually been confirmed by our local tech guy who configured the same spec as Finn, without knowing what Finn had suggested.
Given they both (hopefully) know more than me , I had to take their advice.
Hope this helps and ty for posting .

Thats excellent, if it all happens to go horribly wrong its all your IT guys fault.

Of course if everything works (as it should) I will happily take all the credit...

Are you using it for creative work or pure games?

Daymos

content creation also,

Maya, Blender, Zbrush PSP, Gimp, some CAD (minor) plus virtual world creation etc .

On top of this is the usual business requirements, Docs, Excel, publisher etc , although I use Paint.net to edit textures, photos etc because it is free
and to be honest pretty good.

OH No !!!!

I've just seen the news about Ivy Bridge on another thread .

Does this impact the specification I have ordered please ?
Do I need it ?

Honestly, I don't know. It will probably be slightly faster for the same price point, however its the first of its kind off the production line so if there are any issues it will be these. There are also worrying reports that are saying they have had to be overvolted at the factory which also makes me question how reliable they'll be long term. Personally I think ill stick with the tried and tested tech and may consider swaping in an Ivy bridge cpu later on once I'm sure any teething issues have been resolved.

Can they be swapped in easily enough then Finn ?

I notice that this Clevo model is much heavier than my last one , almost 1kg which is a lot .
Wondered where the extra weight is ?
Do you have any idea how noisy it is ?

I got my last one from Vadim , supplied by Fortune Technology which I why I have ended up here.
I have to say the laptop we bought from them has been very good and the HD was replaced (by fortune) under warranty with no question.
Graphic card has died and taken the HD with it after some 6 years, so not too bad I guess ?

it's why we have placed an order here.

If you are able to install a desktop cpu and heatsink/fan including applying thermal compound iits basically the same. If you're not confident to do that then a decent tech guy should be able to do it for you.

arrived

latest message from PCS

@ 09:42:08 Order Dispatched 7 working days

Laptop arrived 3rd may 2012 , courier was great and sent text messages and e-mails.
Arrived exactly when stated.

It is currently having progs, files etc installed and I will report back as soon as I get access to it and will let you all know what my first impressions are .

I ordered the Targus case, which is quite big to be honest and I may well end up using my previous laptop bag which is lighter in weight.
The Targus bag has lots of pockets, plenty of padding etc but it is almost like a small cabin bag..
will try and upload pics if I can.

Not sure if the tape measure helps ?

specification change

I have just noticed that our requested processor
Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-2760QM (2.40GHz) 6MB

has been changed to

Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Mobile Processor i7-3720QM (2.60GHz) 6MB

We didn't ask for the change , so will be interested to see why it has been implemented.

Hi Micada,

Your build looks excellent.

Matte screens are definitely worthwhile, as they almost completely eliminate annoying screen glare :p

The i7 3720QM is the Ivy Bridge (new architecture) version replacing the Sandy Bridge 2760QM. You basically got yourself a free upgrade :D

ok

Everything installed and it seems to be running fine.

I like the new Matte screen a lot and would recommend it .
Thank you to everyone who said I should get it.

Apparently the back lighting for the keyboard can't be turned off, which is a minor issue . I like Clevo case a lot and
it is Sooooooo much quieter than my old laptop !!!!

So far nothing but good things to say about PCS , the service, the delivery and the laptop.
Thank you everyone .
