New PC build - It's that time again - Looking for advice on how to proceed with stock issues

Hi guys,

I bought my last PC from PC specialist around 3 years ago when the GTX1080 launched as I reckoned that Star Citizen was close to launch... :D Now is time to upgrade for Cyberpunk but stock issues are clearly a problem with both the new gen CPU & GPU's.

Is there any idea when stock availability may improve? Weeks, months.... years?

Would it make sense to place the order and just sit tight and wait?

My desired spec is listed below, but if there any obvious improvements to made please feel free to say... I have £2000 - 2500 budget.

Thanks!

Thanks bud, I knew things weren't great but I didn't realise they were this bad... It sounds like it would be best putting it off till the spring and see if the craziness has subsided.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea, then hopefully stock should be better

There’s global shortages, no guarantee that things will be better by then. You’re probably just as well putting an order in and being prepared to wait for a while.

Your desired spec needs a bit of optimisation, I’m going to come up with an alternative for you. Can I ask what monitor you’ll be using and what types of games you’ll be playing, please? Any other uses like streaming or editing?

Thanks for the response, I used a sticky post about ideal builds but he mentioned things like AMD 9 CPU 5600 / 5800 which when looking at available options didn't seem to be there. The display I use is ASUS PB287Q, my general aim is to play games in 4k.

Games vary from COD Warzone, to Civilisation 6, so both strategy and FPS gaming. I dabble with Star Citizen as well.

I don't really stream or edit, apart from occasional events when friends want to see a specific thing i'm doing.

Cheers bud

Brilliant, ta for getting back to us. So I’ve faffed about and done you a luxury build. Removed the overclock from the CPU as Ryzen chips don’t really need it due to their built in frequency boost. Have a look and let me know what you think 👍

Thanks, there's a few changes I like there. What's the score with the SSD's and the (1st M2 SSD) I have a 4TB standard HDD that I will format and swap from my current computer. So what are people running nowdays? Just several SSD's and doing away with HDD'? I currently just use my 500gb Samsung Evo SSD for my operating system and some demanding games.

The logic behind the two M.2 drives is to have the super fast Samsung as your boot drive, with just your OS and programs on. Then the second one is for fast storage (I’ve been playing Red Dead 2 recently and it’s really helped speed up the loads). Added bonus is that if you need to do a clean install of Windows at any point your games will be safely stored and won’t get wiped. Handy if you’ve got a large games library and saves the pain of downloading them all over again.

I just put the 1TB HDD in for standard storage of music, pics etc. If you’re going to move your own over you can drop that.

If you’re fully retiring your old computer you could also transfer your Windows license over and save yourself around £100 👍

The 500GB SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS M.2 will be for your OS, the 1TB PCS PCIe M.2 SSD will be for your games to go on so that they load up nice and fast, also this way if you have to reinstall windows at any time you don't have to reinstall your games
