Hi folks, I finally called the support line and all I had to do was take the battery out for 30 seconds (I think to reset the BIOS).
All seems fine now - although the clock was then set to 2002 which caused some problems until we realised.
Just thought I would post in case anyone else has a similar problem - I couldn't find anyone who did on the web.
Thumbs up to the pcspecialist support line - only a 60 second wait and somebody on the other end who actually knows what they are doing! (Reason I stopped buying from Dell).
