Octane III portability

Hi all,

I'm split between octane III and Defiance III. What's really important to me is portability but also future proofing. I will likely need it for 3D modelling and rendering as well as gaming however I also want to be able to use it on my lap comfortably around the house. I used to have a macbook pro and liked the weight of that, being able to carry it around with me, on my lap in the lounge and in bed etc. So hard to know which way to go. Ive heard the Octane III is a beast? Might not be good for using around the houseand more stationary? Can any Octane III owners give their thoughts on that?

Any help would be greatly received!

Cheers,

Darren

Hi Darren,
Received my octane last week and it is heavy. Have only used it on the coffee table so far. If you're going to have it on ya lap for any decent amount of time I'd say you probably want a lap tray. Plus there are a vast amount of intakes on the bottom. Can't comment on the define as I don't know how they compare.
The octane is well built and a beast and I am more than happy with it, but it is a desktop replacement.
Hope the above helps and I'm sure you'll be happy with either one you opt for.

I went with one of these in black....

I only ever use my laptop on the couch on my lap so that's the plans with the Octane as well (Only using the above stand) :)

Great thanks gavdee. I guess with the weight I'd be less inclined to use it as much for general use around the house. As much as I want the specs of the Octane I don't want a really heavy thing. So thanks again you've been very helpful! And I hope you enjoy your Octane!

Hi The_Scotster, there doesn't seem to be a link there? Maybe message me? I've never bought one of these before so could do with some advice on best to buy!

I was tempted by those, haven't gone for one yet but may do in the future.
Welcome Darren, hope that either works for ya. The spec on the octane are good, so far I've only thrown a few games at it (bf1 beta and battlefront) no excessive heat and eats up the games at 60-70fps no problem.

Can anyone who already has the Octane III comment on the 1080p screen? I know it is 60hz refresh rate so just wondering if that effects things? How does it look? Also any advice on good laptop tray models? What's the name of the one pictured above?

Thanks again!

I could be completely wrong here but I believe it has a 75hz refresh rate. The specs and information on the main site needs updated from the Octane II chassis (P775DM1-G).

I went for the 15.6" Octane III as I felt that in terms of portability the 17" one would be just too big. I'm sitting with it on my lap at the moment with a bog-standard cooler tray underneath and to be honest, it doesn't feel significantly heavier than my previous HP machine.

I've practiced carrying it around and again, while it's heavy, it's not like "oh my god I'm going to faint if I need to go more than 50 yards". If I was to need to carry it for an hour or two, I'd use a backpack otherwise it'll be fine for going from job to job.

Hi Kellit,

How are you finding the portability of the 17'' Octane III after your concerns? I am having a similar quandry whether to go for this or the 15''.

I understand the larger model has a sub built in and obviously a larger screen is good but I can't envisage what it would be like to use sat on the sofa.
