Hello
I have the P17SM laptop with a GTX 780M (March 2014) and am wondering if it is possible to upgrade the graphics to the GTX 970M/980M ? Is the module available for sale anywhere? Is it simply a swap out ?
It is unlikely to be possible. It may require a BIOS update which is not available from the manufacturer and sourcing a 2nd hand GPU is going to be tricky and expensive.
How do I find out what exact models I have? CPU-Z shows it as "P17SM" and my other laptop as "P17SM-A" (from memory). The usual models however are P170SM/SMA or P177SM/SMA ?
Can the BIOS be upgraded on these laptops?
Finally, once I find out exactly what model I have, is there another place where they may sell spares, so I could get a second hand one? For example what would I do if my graphics card had blown ?
From looking around I have noticed that the Clevo shares components (or is it the same?) with Sager and somehow the Dell Alienware? So one could look in all those places?
I have two of those laptops, called "Vortex" by PCS, they are Clevos, mine label says P170SM, CPU-Z says P17SM-A, I think the terms are interchangeable. Not sure what the other one is I suspect exactly the same.
Anyway my son who uses the other one is happy with his 780M so no probs. I will be upgrading soon to an Alienware R5 with GTX 1080 and when I do I will let him have my Clevo which has the 970M. Befire you ask, I have already bought the AW17 but it was getting rather hot and I had to return it, but will soon re-order it hoping I get a better sample.
