Philips turning the tables for right to repair

This is phenomenal, I would highly recommend people to watch this.

Philips have officially announced that they will be releasing publicly any 3d print designs they have for interchangeable components on their products, so you can just log into your Phillips account, find the part you need, download the print file and load it directly into the printer, or send the file to a 3rd party 3d print service for them to do it if you don’t have the hardware.

THIS IS HUGE! And I sincerely hope this pays dividends for Philips, I also hope others take good note as if this becomes more widely supported, it could kick start 3d printers from something still quite niche and fairly technical process (although I’m sure it’s moved on a long way since I played about with it back in 2014) to a solution found in most homes just like a standard printer.

This is exactly what 3d printing was intended for.

Im quite amazed that it’s someone as large as Philips that has done this so publicly. They aren’t the first by any means but certainly the first of the big boys. Framework who make modular laptops do this kind of thing, there’s a huge community that they’ve really pushed to get rooted that comes up with new designs for framework parts and improvements and framework really take note of the community and often will put their ideas into production.

THIS is the kind of world I want to be a part of!

It's a good start, and I hope it becomes more widespread.

Won't be long before we can all order a new car online and print it in our garage...and not far before we'll be at Star Trek (and other space opera) matter printing tech

Although I'd really have to go the whole hog and get one of those nylon printers that Adam Savage has 🤤

Why not 3D print a new 3D printer...

One of the 3D printer companies was famous for letting you upgrade your printer by printing freely available components from their website (or buy them if you wanted injection moulded versions).

I offered to by my father a 3D printer for his birthday, so he could make parts for his scale models...but he just orders them from someone who already offers the service 🤷‍♂️

I'm absolutely all for this. I would only want caution applied for anything important. What will quickly see this sort of fantastic enterprise fall straight off a cliff is going to be shoddy copies that lead to failure/injury/etc.

I have absolutely no doubt that it will be T&C to the high heavens with regards to accessing any parts. As long as the spec requirements for what you need to replicate is offered and stated clearly it shouldn't be an issue with sensible folks. It's when the idiots get involved that I always get the fear.
