Recoil series 18: RTX5090 laptop

Hi all.

Just thought i would write a review of my recent experience of buying a new Hi Spec laptop from PCspecialist.

I was originally looking at replacing my gaming pc which has a 3090ti and a ryzan 5950x but after looking at what gains i would make i decided to wait before upgrading.

I decided to go for a laptop with high specs as a compromise as i am away from home a fair bit. (quick note this is not a laptop you want to be carrying around on your shoulder for long journeys it is a heavy laptop.)

This was a prebuilt laptop but was pretty much exactly the same as the system I was putting together.

I love PCspecialist website and how you can build your system etc and this is my second system that I have ordered from them.

RECOIL 18 SERIES RGB BACKLIT UK KEYBOARD

I have been using this laptop for a couple of weeks now so below is my humble opinion so far.

This is more of a desktop replacement than it is a portable laptop, you wouldn’t want to be sitting with it on your knees for a long period of time. I invested in a small lap table which works great.

The screen is beautiful and really pleasing when gaming or using youtube or the net etc. as you can imagine 4k on a laptop screen is very good.

Do not think that you are going to be seeing RTX5090 PC graphics card results on this machine. You will see great results and be able to play all of the latest games but it is still a laptop 5090. There are plenty of reviews on YT etc that will better explain all of the reasons than I can.

I have been using the laptop for work and also gaming, destiny 2, balders gate 3 to name a couple.

The games play without any difficulty at good frame rates at 4k, but be aware the laptop fans run loud when gaming. Your wife won’t be to happy if your gaming in the living room and she is trying to watch telly.
There are a few different setting to adjust battery life to suit whichever application you are using. Obv gaming = Performance but the is entertainment for say web browsing youtube etc and quiet mode.

Overall I love this laptop, it is so smooth and fast I know there isn’t anything it won’t handle.

Here is my one and only complaint.

When I received my laptop I expected to open the box remove the laptop and for it to look like a shiny new pin.

After removing the laptop box from the larger box I noticed the small locking flap on the laptop box was ripped like it had been opened roughly ripped slightly and closed again. Once everything was removed it all looked as it should and all of the parts were there.

Now I understand that these systems are built in house but when I opened the laptop the screen had obvious signs of being wiped clean with say an alcohol wipe or some sort of wipe and not very well I may add. Now I am the sort of person that cleans my screens religiously to a high standard and I was shocked at how badly the screen had been cleaned.

I was going to take pictures and say something but I decided to use the laptop and check everything out and I am more than happy with the system itself.

Although I am more than happy with the system overall and i wouldn't want to return it I just can’t get rid of the feeling like I received a return. And when your paying £3k plus that’s not what I expect.

If anyone has any questions etc please feel free to ask.

As a person that is utterly anal about clean screens may I recommend Caloclean with their own cleaning cloths. I'm a photographer and came across this product for cleaning camera lenses. It is alcohol free solvent free and has anti static thingys. It is really good and GENTLE! PS the laptop looks ace!

I’ll check this out also, I’m big on zero chemicals, not just because they’re better for the screen but also for the environment.

Another one worth a look is this which is citric acid based:

I bought mine in September 2023, have spilt some and am still not even half way through

Thankd very much for the recommendation

I use the UK-made Ecomoist Natural Screen Cleaner on my computers, screens, mobile devices...works well on the Alienware OLED glossy screen too!

Literally whenever I see the word "moist" in anything, I just start laughing, I'm such a child!

Another on the list, appreciated (y)

Me too…although I misread it as ‘Eco Mist’ initially.

The Alienware OLED really pops with the glossy screen, but it picks up fingerprints & marks so easily (what’s the opposite of oleophobic?).

I still will tout this ONLY for proper glass fronted screens (which I believe all OLEDs are?)

The hands down best cleaner for a glass screen I’ve come across, and this is coming from someone who can’t help but spit a little bit when I’m in passionate conversation on a work call say, and those droplets end up on the screen, is this!

And I hate myself because it’s blatantly overpriced, but it’s hands down the best result on any glass I’ve had to date, that’s without the need for any solution.

I got one of those cloths with my Studio Display, and it works well on the glass of the Studio Display, but the anti-reflective coating on the Alienware just creates fine iridescent streaks.

Ah, that's interesting cos it works really well on the Apple anti reflective, glad you'd had experience of that!
