Red Orchestra 2: Heroes of Stalingrad

Dying to snipers is probably your least threat imo... I've played the game solidly since it came out and I've found that the most common cause of my death are rifleman, NilSatis is absolutely correct in saying that a bolt action rifle can take out the same target a sniper can the only difference between the two is that one comes with a scope and make targeting slightly easier

RO2 is the most realistic shooter I have ever played, I've hit a guy in the shoulder at 500 yards away and he's died about 20 seconds later because he didnt bandage the wound, You have to use cover all the time, Running around like a headless chicken just gets you killed

I try and put myself in the shoes of the soldier and think like they would have on the battlefield, I find it keeps me alive only if for a few seconds longer & I have to agree again with NilSatis.. If you get upset/annoyed/angry at dying then this is not the game for you

I've run into a few campers but they soon learn their lesson, Its also better to move with a group of people that way if you go down the person who took you out does too. If you plan on being a submachine gun class, DO NOT SPRAY AND PRAY!

Singleplayer I'd give the game about 4/10 and MP probably a 9/10

I don't get upset getting killed, but when 31 out of 32 people on the other team are snipers, then i will throw the game out the window and never think about it again.

Nah only 1 person per team can be a sniper, It doesn't scale with map size either... 16/32/64 all are only 1 sniper per team

Just remember what me and Nil said Dayve, just because there is one sniper per doesn't mean you are safe... I have been picked off plenty of time by someone with a bolt action plenty of times...

I cannot stress this point enough because the last thing I want is you coming back and complaining that I gave you a bad review

Getting killed by bolt action rifles I don't mind at all. It takes at least some skill to aim the thing. I always use bolt actions in WW2 games, even in CoD where it was pretty much suicide with all the people running around with submachine guns.

I'll add you when I get it. It'll probably be in 2 weeks or so, when I get paid for redecorating the entire upstairs part of my uncle's house. Hopefully they still have some copies of BF3, SWTOR and Skyrim available for preorder by that time as well.

Alright, got it installed, played for a while. It's brutal, fun and very intense... I don't really see how it differs from CoD or other arcade shooters though. Yes it's slightly, very slightly less arcadey, but really it's just people running around with PPSH's and MP40's, spraying and praying, and it works. Also Punkbuster is 0% effective against hackers, I'm pretty sure I've encountered 2 in the 3-4 hours of MP I've played today.

that's a little disappointing, I was hoping that it would be quite tactical. Are you playing it through steam?

You have to remember that there are hundreds of people playing RO2 that arent playing with friends and therefore do the whole "one man army" thing, I tend to do that when I'm not playing with friends

I haven't really run into any hackers and if I do find any I leave the server and find a new one, I will admit I've seen a few people running around MP40's/PPSH's but you gotta remember that those weapons have a limit for how many can be on the battlefield...

Dayve, do you think that soldiers complained in WWII because there were 30 men charging them with MP40's... I did warn you that this a game where you are meant to be put yourself in the shoes of a WWII soldier

In the shoes of a WW2 soldier in Stalingrad. We're talking late 1942 to early 1943. The STG44 hadn't been invented yet, which is why it's called the STG 44, created in 1944, and yet half the god damn Axis team are using it, just like any other arcade WW2 shooter. Also the semi-automatic rifles. I believe the German one was distributed in '43, way after 6th army had surrendered, so this should not be in the game. If I remember rightly the Russian semi-automatic rifle came a little earlier, but if distributed to the Russian troops at Stalingrad AT ALL it would have been in such tiny numbers that it shouldn't be in the game, and certainly the other half of the Russian team shouldn't be using it beside the half that are already using the PPSH.

Which brings me to my next point... The PPSH. Russian soldiers in Stalingrad were lucky if they got a rifle. The vast majority of Russians who died there were hastily raised militia thrown in to a meat mincing machine to buy time for the offensive to be prepared. It wasn't until around Christmas that the Guards armies began to appear armed to the teeth. Before that they had to make do with what little they had.

Now I'm in no way saying only half the Russian team should be allowed to have a weapon and that all but 1 of those weapons should be rifles, but I was led to believe the game reflected the reality of the battle. It doesn't. From what I can see there is no weapon restriction at all except on the sniper rifle, because no matter what team I play on I'm the only person on a 50 man server using a rifle, the rest have either weapons that weren't invented yet or SMG's, and people ARE running around like headless chickens and firing those SMG's without aiming them, and it works well.

I dunno, this just isn't anywhere near as realistic as it was made out to be. I don't think I can handle the fact that the majority of each time are using weapons that weren't invented yet, in a game that claims to be "a new leap in realistic combat" or whatever it is it says on the front of the box. I would say I'll keep playing until BF3 because I have nothing else to play but in reality I'm gonna play another 2-3 hours, get killed by a weapon that didn't exist until 1944 all the time and then file it right away next to Metro 2033 on my "Games I was led to believe were awesome but turned out to be rubbish" shelf.

nice words dude, think I will completely avoid this! Unless it pops up for 3 quid on steam! Sounds exactly what I do not want in a online game! Sounds like Modern warfare and slack ops!

Don't take my word for it, you might think it's the bees knees, it's all about opinion, although I will say that I made a thread saying mostly what I said above on Tripwire's RO2 forum and a lot of people agree with the things I was saying, but also a lot of them make excuses for it. The general consensus seems to be that they've tried to please their old fans and also attract some CoD fans by compromising the realism, and in doing so have ****ed off their old fans and not attracted any new ones at all.

Also the game is clearly unfinished, which explains why I had to download an 8 gigabyte patch when I installed from disk and another 2.5 gigabyte patch has been released today. Maybe this will fix the attrocious buggyness of the game, like when I hit the dirt and start flying through the floor and can see through walls if I lean in to them at a certain angle, as if I had a wallhack running. Maybe it'll also add the promised "limit on weapons", so not everybody can use whatever the hell they want. I highly doubt they'll be removing the weapons that didn't exist at that time though.

Bottom line for me is this game is about the battle of Stalingrad, the most brutal, desperate and most unique battle ever fought between two armies in the history of warfare where tanks were built in the factories of the city of Stalingrad, driven out the front door of the factory with no gun sights and right in to the battle raging across the road, where ammo was so scarce that soldiers on both sides were beating each other to death with shovels, where the Russians made suicidal attacks armed with shovels, rifles and occasionally an SMG, and above all the absolute most common weapon throughout the entire 5-6 months of the battle was the bolt action rifle. The game just does not feel like that desparate battle because everybody is using fully automatic assault rifles that didn't even exist at the time.

Also, my god, the campers are immense. Capture the flag is the basic go-to mode of the server. NOBODY CAPTURES THE FLAGS! You get maybe 1 or 2 people trying to capture the flags out of 50, the rest are just camping in buildings trying to get as many kills as possible. There's no friggin movement at all, just one big camping party.
