VGA button query + General Optimus II opinions :)

Hi chaps,

Got my Optimus II unboxed finally yesterday, and installed Windows. Got my Fenvi caddy installed, now i'm done using the DVD drive constantly (loud drive by the way, compared to my Toshiba!) with the original Optimus faceplate on it, fits perfectly, nice one PCS, nice that it's perfect... swine seems to be only removable though by taking of the HDD cover and sliding it out from in there though... any other suggestions, bar having a couple of ribbons hanging out of the laptop constantly? :p - I think it will be in there permanently though, but for now, it's just sat there snugly without even being screwed in.
?
Two questions, it seems to be spinning the drive constantly? Is this normal, or am I just thinking it's spinning fast constantly because simply it seems louder than my 7200 750gb in the main tray? maybe cause it's in the caddy though? Wasn't really all that audible in my old laptop, when not being accessed constantly... I wasn't happy with the fit in the caddy though, very tight connection, had to spudge it in, with a coaster haha. Despite this, it's fairly loose in there, on the Y axis. Maybe some foam in there would make it sit nicer, and quieter... amazed it doesn't even screw in also, but hey!

Also, is it normal that Windows 7 doesn't predict a figure for the time remaining when on battery? It shows a percentage, but doesn't show a time until it goes flat, like my Toshiba did... am I missing a driver, or is this normal with the Optimus?

Last of all, think I got all the drivers on now, and the laptop does switch between the GPU's when it needs more power, switching to the 555m, according to the NVIDIA control panel taskbar icon. My VGA button turns green when I press it too, but the NVIDIA control panel taskbar icon doesn't change to show the 555m is in use, and a message just pops up saying, "in order to make 3d applications work on iGPU or dGPU, please make sure that those applications should be exited first and run them again" - is this a friendly reminder of what to do before pressing the button, and after pressing the button, or is this the reason why the GPU doesn't change to the 555m when I press the vga button? If anyone could shed any light on the matter, that'd be fab, as I don't really understand the system.

EDIT: When the VGA button is orange, and I start a video playing in VLC media player, the NVIDIA taskbar icon shows a switch to the 555m, saying 1 program is running on the GPU... when I start the video playing when the VGA button is green, there is no change, and the taskbar icon says no programs are using the GPU... does this mean this is working correctly? The VGA button simply disables the switching, so it uses the Intel graphics when optimus is off, and doesn't use the 555m? I thought instead the VGA button disabled optimus, but instead of disabling the 555m, it used the 555m over the intel graphics?

Now if only I had some USB 3.0 devices, and my HD TV with me here, so I could test all the ports!

Thanks in advance,

Matt.

Yes that is correct. Green VGA button = Only Intel GPU will be used. Orange GPU button = Intel and Nvidia GPU will be used. You can only use the Nvidia GPU, but that is pointless IMO. You would have to go to the control panel, change the global setting to only use the Nvidia GPU.

So basically, when orange, switching to save power is on?

So it's working right? :)
