Restoring an Old Laptop

I've ordered a PC from here and I'm giving my old laptop to my sister.
It runs an old AMD Athlon 2.2Ghz processor and only has 1GB of RAM.

I'm going to put Windows XP back on it with the hope that it will run faster. Will this work? It came with XP when I bought it. I currently run Windows 7 on it and it is quite slow.

Is there anything else I could to to speed it up?

Cheers.

It should run faster with XP,
some people will say it's a backward step but I still run XP
on my old computer with no problems.
Wouldn't hurt to double the RAM if possible.

If there is the capacity to you could always upgrade the RAM to try to help the speed of the laptop.

Normally very easy to do and you may see an improvement in performance for very little cost.

Here are the processor and ram requirements for WinXP:

Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)

You have 2.2GHz (2200MHz) which is much more than the required and recommended amount so this is all good :)
You have 1GB RAM (1000GB) which is also much more than the required and recommended amount so this is all good :)
Your laptop will run WinXP with no problem at all :)

*EDIT* And also stated by paul you can upgrade your RAM which will increase perfomance in speed for your laptop :)

You should consider installing ubuntu. I had a very very old laptop (c. 2004) and it actually made it usuable. It's very easy to install and has a nice gui

Yeah I know it can run it lol. It used to run it. It's just that the laptop has slowed down a lot recenty. I was wondering if this is due to ware and tare on the hardware or not.
Dunno if I can install more RAM. Don't think it's possible on my laptop. It's an old Compaq Presario.

LOL my bad, well if its running slow on windows 7 that would be pretty normal my computer that had 1GB ram and 2.93GHz processor was running slow on it aswell but once i put WinXP back on it, it ran smoothly so your laptop should be able to run it smoothly as well :)

*EDIT* My computer was bought in 2006 as well, so yeah really old, stopped using at like 2009 because it was too slow, last month i started using it again but was still slow so did a fresh install of WinXP and as i said worked great :)
