Sound output jack fails after sleep

Laptop is a 17" Vortex and I have noticed two things happen when the laptop enters sleep mode, but after a few hours.

1) suddenly there are huge hum coming out of jack/external speakers even though the laptop is sleeping - this has woken me up in the middle of the night a few times now.
2) after laptop wake-up, there is no sound coming out of the jack, regardless if (1) has also happened

Has anyone else seen this or do you know how to fix it? Is the laptop broken?

I've read this in other topics, sorry I don't have a direct link. From what I recall, there is a known bug in the audio drivers. You apparently have to install some other Clevo utility to work around this. Seems pretty poor to me, it's one thing that's put me off buying a PCS laptop until I hear this bug is fixed properly and doesn't need extra software installs to address it (unless someone has a convincing explanation - please, I'd genuinely love to understand this - that the extra software is really just a standard and expected part of the normal audio drivers? - although in that case why isn't it included with the audio drivers?).
