hey, well i've had my pc 3 months now, so time to start thinking upgrades . I find that some games boot up really slow, like bf3 and swtor :s.. so was wondering does an SSD really make much of a difference, i hear there fast but are they really that fast?

also if pcs or someone who knows how much do pcs sell 80gb and 120gb ssd actually are as an order would be nice to? i used the configurator to get a rough price for them, so i can compare in the mean time.

Yes they do make quite a large difference especially in MMO's:





In terms of prices for SSD's I'm not sure as there currently isn't an integrated system to buy components but you could call PCSpecialist on 0844 499 4000 for a price.

Sorry but really have to say i love the fantastic completely unbiased way some people show benchmarks between different things (just to point out not aimed at you Phoenix) they really should not compare a new SSD drive that is built for speed against a very large slow storage drive as this in no way reflects on the purpose of what the drive is designed for, the only way they should have done this benchmark is using a smaller performance HDD to give a true representation of the speed difference.

although i acually have the hdd the ssd was comparing to accept mines only 1tb, so was kinda helpful seeing how much faster they go.
i sent pcs an email and got a speedy response, they must not be busy at the moment, last time took them a day or two.

80GB Intel 320 Series SSD - £108.00
120GB Intel 320 Series SSD - £133.00
120GB Intel 520 Series SSD (faster) - £164.00
120GB Kingston Hyper-X SSD - £153.00

might get the intel 320 120gb, have to see how much money i have left over from christmas first, then ill ring up and order.

edit: is the 520 even out yet? i been trying to find a review you on it but cant seem to find any.

I understand but since Rudolph has the 1TB caviar green and he's looking at the difference to expect then it's pretty useful. Another thing to remember is that the larger drives(2TB like in the review) are slightly faster than the smaller (1TB) drives so the difference will be even greater.

Fair enough in that case the comparison was good as i did not know he had a CG. When i read up on HDD's the info i got was the smaller drives were faster as a 2TB is spread over 4 500GB platters and the 1TB 2 500GB platters but either way the more you put on a drive the slower things get.

It's intel 510 not 520.

How does that work? If I swap the bog standard 250GB drive (in the custom desktop configurator on the site) for this drive (if it is actually the 510) the price increases by £190. Does that mean the standard drive costs MINUS £26 (i.e. it costs more not to have it than to have it)?!
