Star Citzen

Hello,

Has anyone else bought into the Star Citzen beta at all.

I bought mine two days ago with a ship and got to fly around a bit. I must admit its a beautiful looking game but looks soooo far away from being anywhere near finished.

I feel like i shouldn't have bought it, im not really into this early access games i think some of them are a bit of a scam however this game looks like it has so much production value and it filled me with a bit of confidence.

How does everyone else feel about early access games?

I bought this one because i fiqure the game is going to be about 2 times the price when its finally released.

It made me think are people just releasing these "Early access" games with any commitment. We pay but is there anything to say they actually have to finish it by a certain time. I didn't read into the T&C's of any of the ones i have bought because meh, but the thought has crossed my mine.

Think i'll put a lid on Early Access games for now.

The game itself is beautiful and im not aware of anything like it out there, my initial thoughts are Mass Effect with a Space Flight Sim that should have been there from the start.

Nothing says they will finish the game even though you already paid for it. Like the people who 'donate' to a game dev through kickstarter or something, they are promised a game or whatever at the end but if it goes wrong they are stuck with a half developed game or nothing.

As far as early access stuff, I stay well clear. My brother is always downloading stuff as soon as he can then bitching that it doesn't work properly - something isn't in the game yet blah blah blah... It's the risk you take for the benefit of a cheaper price/better package. I personally can't be bothered with it and figure if some games are never finished anyway you probably can afford to buy the game at full price later.

I was against the idea but the two I've purchased I've been reasonably impressed with. Next Car Game is great fun even in its pre-alpha state and has enough fun for 3-4 hours gameplay at least and thats without including multiplayer (LAN only atm). Then there is the showcase arena thingy which shows off some of the cool destruction on their engine and its great fun to destroy a car down to the size of a football. I seem to get regular updates with it too adding new stuff, optimizing the UI etc.

Verdun however hasn't been quite as much of a good game, although I think its because of how limited its genre is (WW1 shooter) It's pretty much rifles only at the moment although I hope they add some other combat. I have been waiting for something WW1 based for a while but perhaps a more story based game would have been more enjoyable as you don't worry about the limits so much then.

Early Access has become too common on Steam in my opinion. I think the concept it great, and works very much like any crowdfunding, just specifically for gamers. However, there are so many poor games on there now that are marked "Early Access" that the concept loses value (which is sad for the genuinely good games using the process).

The example of Star Citizen is a bit different, because it is coming from an established developer that has previously been involved in making some great (and even classic) games.

The "scam" element with all these things comes from the unknown. Personally I still feel a little scammed by DayZ, because it has been in Early Access/Alpha for so long that you wonder what the hell they have done with all that money (especially as it gets in Steam Sales etc, so people buy it and never install it).

Kickstarter etc is one thing as it is set up to "support development" or somesuch notion, but with Steam Early Access I feel it more buying into a game. Yes it says that it is alpha/not finished/buggy etc, but you are still buying it like any other game. I don't know if it has even happened yet, but I will be interested to see what happens if a game on Steam Early Access gets cancelled...just wonder where they sit legally/morally :)

See I really like what Steam did with Greenlight. From my understanding of it, that was small/indie games that were FINISHED getting the greenlight to be sold through Steam. It still gave developers exposure and support from a potentially large gaming community, but didn't charge anyone anything util the game was in a state to be sold (granted they could update/change/improve afterwards, but the games are still meant to be done as far as I know).

Waffle over.

(I swear blind I just wrote all that waffle just to have a moan about how long DayZ has been in "alpha" :D )

I think a big issue is that for every build they release on Steam they have to bug fix it a lot, unlike a regular alpha build that the public wouldn't see, these ones are relatively bug free. This extends the development time by a huge amount because they have to do major bug testing on more builds and bug fixing of course.

I think it is only a good idea for small indie developers who otherwise would have no hope of continuing development of their game. For example it goes well alongside a Greenlit game and shows the backers that the game actually exists.

I have purchased two early access only.

Planetary Annihilation and Shroud of the Avatar,

PA because it looked awesome on kickstarter, but the pledges were expensive, when ti came to steam it was about £70 but I ended up picking it up for about £20 in a sale. The development is steady and on going and since my first play they have added ALOT. It promises to be the next big thing since TA and SupCom.

SotA because it is the spiritual successor to Ultima Online and it is being made by Richard Garriot - Enough said.

As for Star Citizen, if I remember rightly it is the biggest crowdfunded game of something like £3m+ or something, in fact it hit its goal on crowdfunding in less than 8hours of going up. Now this was something like almost 2years ago form memory, so you would think with all that money and 2years you would get more than you have now. I think it is just being strung out for cash now. It was meant to kill off Eve Online, but sadly they have taken to long and CCP have changed tactics and release regular expansions to keep things moving and keep the interest and have always been on steady growth since launch nearly 11years ago.

Damn that gone up since I payed attention last.
My statement is even more to the point, Star Citizen should have ALOT more to show for it's self by now.

Yes it makes me wonder if half the backers will still be alive by the time of release and whether CryEngine 3 would even be any good by then.

I reckon Star Citizen will get finished they've just got carried away but the amount of money they raised and to feature creep has set in. This has happened with some of the other big games on Kickstarter too.

The new Elite game is looking pretty good though I only went for the basic game when I did the Kickstarter. I don't see the point in paying more to access a game before it's finished when I have limited play time and so many games still to play. :)

Hasn't Star Citizen always had a scheduled release of 2016?
Also Elite does look like its going to be amazing, need to get a decent joystick for it, any recommendations?

Going by their Kickstarter page Nov 2014 was listed for game pledges. Though that doesn't mean it was going to come out on that date i guess.

For Elite would a gamepad work or do you think a joystick might be essential? I hadn't even thought about that to be honest!

.

Yes, it's Elite Dangerous vs Star Citizen. Discussion of this topic on the net I've read is quite mature, and non-flamy. On the face of it there is healthy respect by each of the developers for one another.

They really do need to sort out the rules on Early Access. How anyone is allowed to refuse a refund is beyond me :)
