Student needing Help buying first PC

Hello everyone

I am a student doing games art and animation and I'm currently in my last year about to do my final project and I am needing a pc that will be able to handle Unreal Engine 4 and substance painter. basically I need a computer that I can do both basic and advanced animation, modeling and rendering without having too many problems. The Pc I have at the moment has very old parts and I'll probably be selling it for £150 even though I bought it for £600. I don't know a lot about pcs and pc parts and have been relying on other peoples opinions and what reviews I could find

I have done the spec that I was hoping someone could tell me if they think this would be good enough for what I need it for. Obviously if anyone can advise me on a cheaper build or as cheap as can be reasonably possible for what I need the PC for then I am all up for suggestions or build examples.

Any help would be appreciated

There are some obvious economies you can make:

Drop the CPU to an i5 8500, which due to boost clocks is only about 200MHz slower, but is a lot cheaper.
You don't need a liquid cooler, the Frostflow 100 air is fine
If you're not using the features of a Z370 mobo, go for a B360 one
The value of an SSHD as a secondary drive is questionable, since your OS etc will all be on the SSD anyway.
Go for the PM961 SSD which is a lot faster than the WD Blue for ~£10 more

If you're doing rendering, a build based around an AMD Ryzen R5 2600x or 2700x may be a lot better, depending on the software.

University Student needing help with build

hello everyone

I am currently in university doing games art and animation and I am looking to get a new PC but I don't know a lot about PC's or how to build them I am a complete beginner when it comes to this. I am basically trying to get a build that I can use with a set of programs that I will be using at Uni

these are the programs that I will be using
  • Maya 2016 / 2017
  • mudbox
  • Substance Painter
  • Unreal Engine 4
  • Marvelous Designer
  • Zbrush
  • Adobe creative suite photoshop/ illustrator/ after effects
  • Wacom Cintiq 13"hd LED Graphics tablet
  • casual gaming like Rome Total war 2

If that's the software you're using and you still have room in the budget, the i7 8700 (non-k) could well be worth it for the extra threads and so much higher performance in multithreaded workloads.

If you're doing a lot of rendering, then an R7 2700x build with its 8 cores/16 threads would be a very good option:

For whatever build you go for I'd suggest the 550W PSU as it could open up your upgrade options more for future GPUs.
