Temps for the Optimus IV

Hi i have recently bought an Optimus IV

here are my specs

17" screen
i5-3360M
4GB 1600MHz
GTX 660M
Artic MX-4 thermal compound
Advanced-N 6235 Wireless/Gigabit lan
3 year silver warranty
i slammed in a SSD 120gb to speed thing up

My question is when i am playing Metro 2033 @ resolution 1900/1080, all normal settings, turned off DOF, and AAA
i get a respectable 30-40fps average.

My temps were
87c processor
85c Mobo
71c Graphics

are these temp normal or a little too high, the comp has been run in now for 2-3 weeks?

you could invest in a laptop cooler/pad.

Also note that metro is a very very resource grabbing game!

the temps are a tad high, but so are mine when i play metro....

What temps do you get at idle?

Hi, I have made my own cooler as such it is a piece of wood will strategically placed holes and groves to allow better air flow, not great but it does help for about 3c cooler.

As for the temps when idle i have attached a pic.
TEMPS OPTIMUS IV.png

As i was writing this post with no background apps, i get temps rising to 62c processors and 59c mobo, graphics is 52c.

Those idle temps are normal.

This, however, is not - could be an uneven thermal interface material application on the CPU, but do try other applications under load, see if the processor stabilises around 80-82 degrees.

My daughter just finished playing Sims 2 Deluxe and the max temps reached are 75c mobo, 79c cpu and 78c gpu

How about trying Prime95 and GPUz together ?

ill then do a screen shot like before.

That's better, plus I would imagine Sims to be a CPU-intensive application. Your GPU temps are in order.

Prime95 is decent, Cinebench 11.5 is also a good CPU benchmark - http://downloads.guru3d.com/CineBENCH-11.5-download-2475.html

Thing with Metro 2033 is, that it's a lone example, not to mention that the game itself is rather unoptimised, which could lead to "wasteful" load, like you would see in the FurMark bench for GPUs for an example.

P.S. 3DMark Vantage is also a good tool in determining overall system performance, stresses both the GPU & CPU, provides quantifiable and repeatable results - http://downloads.guru3d.com/3DMark-Vantage-(Build-1.1.0)-download-1906.html (348 MB) Not to mention that it looks great,

I have done the prime 95 test and Furmark.

these are the results .

i did run the Furmark for 75 % of the 15 min full screen burn in test the rest you can see.

Wait, you've done Prime95 and FurMark at the same time? You're hardcore. :-D As you can see, GPU temps are within norms, your only "worry" is the CPU, try Cinebench alone in a multi-threaded test.

I wouldn't push the system to such limits, if I were you - it only has one fan to remove heat from those heatsinks.

Never knew that, i always done both stress tests before, i only had a desktop, i can see your point 90+ temps are pushing it.

i did the Cinebench as you asked and the temps are 76c cpu and 74c mobo

Hehe, given the cooling system I wouldn't play with FurMark & CPU benches at the same time. : ))

That looks decent, I'd bet you could get the same thermal readings while playing Battlefield 3 online, which is a better optimised, more balanced application in terms of GPU/CPU load, than Metro 2033 is.

When running Prime95+Furmark I get 99-100 on my CPU.
Given that I've never seen it run under games that high, I'm not so worried. I am also using throttlestop.

Hi thanks for your support, since then i haven't been playing Metro 2033 too much and temps have stayed at decent levels, i just hope when Metro Last light comes out it will be better optimized, anybody know if it needs the same specs as Metro 2033?

Do you know if you can upgrade the fan on the Optimus IV? maybe put one in with a little more power?

Better optimised or not I would expect it needs better specs than 2033 (at least for max performance)

Better optimised in this case means the removal of redundant code that runs circles through the CPU needlessly.

Same thing with Cryostasis (same devs?) - a bunch of shaders on top of each other resulting in horrible, just horrible performance. Crysis 1 ran better.

I am aware of the potential improvements :), I still think it will require 'better' specs than 2033.
