Today’s Finds…

Today I was taking apart another PC and found a couple of little interesting bits…

Here we have an i7 chip that appears to have been responsible for slowly roasting the motherboard to death:

A Samsung 840 120GB in reasonable condition:

A beast of a PSU that looks like it might find a new lease of life in a self build project… if I can ever be bothered.

And a dusty, but fully working MSI GTX 970:

There was also what used to be a pretty top of the range Be Quiet fan cooler in there but the actual fan itself was dead and the fins were so clogged with dust I’m not sure even my funky blower would’ve cleared it. That state of affairs may also have been part of the reason why the system died.

Also an a sound card that looks like it’d been quite expensive in 2012 and 32GB of Crucial 1600MHz RAM.

Fond memories! I must admit that I always used to cheap out and get less expensive soundcards, so I am enjoying these modern days where the onboard audio is sufficient for most uses.

It’s been interesting taking apart a system that belonged to someone else and seeing what they chucked their money at. This one was a solid 8/10 for me 👍

I think I’ve got some ‘vintage’ gear in the loft/shed/garage, but really don’t want to hunt for them as it will involve finding lots of rubbish that I should dump, but would rather keep stashed/hidden…and there’ll be creepy crawlies.

There may be a Motorola 68882 co-processor board from a Mac SE/30 of 1988 vintage somewhere in the (the SE/30 might still be there too); might also have a GeForce 8800GT from my 2008 MacPro in the same place (my sister has the MacPro now, but I’d upgraded it bit by the time she got it).

Although, I wonder how much effort would be required to fit my gaming PC into a MacPro case

But without the actual items (or the effort) to photograph them I’m going to claim they’re simply not there…unless I decide to get my spelunking gear out and go cave diving at the weekend

Oh man I took my Sapphire 6950's flashed the BIOS and overclocked them to get 6970 performance back in the day. Ran two of them Crossfire for some reason, I think there was like 3 games that supported multi GPU's. One of those GPUs are still going though, her nephew currently has it in a system I threw together to play Fortnight and Minecraft. Still surprisingly ok but yeah it's really really old now
