Too little thermal paste

Hi all,

Just to start, I forgot to take pictures when the CPU water block was off so this is very anecdotal, apologies.

I received my PC from PCSpecialist in August 2023. It was a 7800x3d, 32GB RAM, Corsair water cooler (H100I LCD) and I added my own RTX4070ti and SSDs. During the building phase it failed in testing but no notes were added. It was then re-tested and passed. I paid extra for the Arctic thermal paste (Which I now think was a mistake as the builder would have to clean off the pre-applied thermal paste on the water cooler block before applying the new paste). I received the PC in excellent condition etc. Had previous good experiences with PCS.

I was initially a little concerned around the CPU temps as they were on the higher side. However, they got a bit better when I adjusted the PBO curve etc. Recently, I have been having weird temp spikes where all of a sudden, where the CPU temp jumps to 70 degrees under minimal load at idle. I know the 7800x3d likes to instantly boost when being used for any large or small task. so this makes sense. I noticed, however, that I was hitting 84 degrees in Cyberpunk recently at 1440p 100fps, max settings. This seemed high to what others were reporting.

Today I decided to repaste the CPU and when I removed the water block it looked like there was barely any thermal paste on the CPU or block. It looks like the pea technique had been used but nowhere near enough. I reapplied with better thermal paste (Noctua N2) and reseated it. Instantly already, I am getting 5 degree less at idle, 15-20 degrees less at full load in Cyberpunk at the same spot and no thermal jumps at idle.

Should I let PCS know about this or would it be pointless? I'm thinking that the person who built it (Don't want any punishment etc just learning) may have already left the company etc and it was a year and a half ago now.

Cheers

I would definitely let PCS know as it's important training they'd need to pass on to the builder concerned, plus to protect you just in case anything happens down the line.

With any Corsair coolers, the additional paste will actually reduce performance, not increase it as it's lesser paste.

Best getting advice in future on specs.

Will do, thanks.

Do you mean that if you just add the extra paste without removing the pre-applied stuff? Then yeah that wouldn't increase performance. I'd expect them to rub off with isopropyl the pre-applied paste.

If you mean the arctic compound is worse than Corsair's pre-applied, then fair enough.

Yes, this. On any paste reapplication you have to clean off existing paste.

I wonder when PCS will offer Thermal Grizzly Kryosheet (£20) instead of Arctic paste for £7.
I really hope they do offer it, because for enthusiasts that aren't interested in LM, it's an absolute no brainer.
