Upgrading Vortex IV memory from 8GB to 32GB

My Vortex currently has Kingston HyperX "Impact" memory in it, but they don't do 4x8GB kits. They don't seem to think any laptops in the world have more than two slots or want more than 16GB of memory. Their other "PC" memory (Fury, Savage, Predator) all do, but not the Impact. I don't want to take the risk of buying two 2x8GB kits because although within each kit the two sticks will be paired, the two pairs won't be. Seems like a recipe for disaster to (a mostly uninformed about memory) me.

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I should buy (and where from) ? If you're going to suggest something, could you please be really specific or I really won't be able to follow that advice. Just "get yourself some GSkill's" is gonna have me staring at their website wondering what I want. There are a looooot of letters and numbers and voltages and speeds and settings that go mostly over my head.

It's dual channel memory, meaning that each pair needs to be matched for full speeds. So you'd get 2 pairs of 8 to make 32.

If it was quad channel, then they'd be sold in x4 kits.

OK, as far as my mobo and processor are concerned, there is no quad channel, so trying to get a 4 stick set and thinking that it's better than two paired sets is wrong. It's called dual-channel for a reason, and that reason is that pairs of memory sticks need to be matched. My mobo should have colour coded slots, two of one colour and two of another colour and I should insert the pairs into matching colours (e.g. one pair in the red slots and one pair in the blue slots, note, I don't know the actual colours). If I wasn't running Windows on it (and typing on it) right now and it didn't have 12 cables plugged into it, I'd take a quick look to confirm.

So, by all means I should buy 4 of the same type of memory, but hoping to find a 4x8GB kit rather than two 2x8GB kits is completely pointless. It would only be relevant to get a 4x set if my mobo/processor supported quad channel, because then all four would need to be 'paired' ('quadded').

Now I know, I can take the exact spec/name of my current stick of 8 and simply order two 16GB kits of it.

Cheers :punk:

No worries. If it helps, I've got 2x4gb of one brand of memory and then 2x8gb of another brand but same speed and they work fine together.

Good to know. I gotta buy four though, so might as well get 'em all the same :)

EDIT: I did get two pairs and if CPU-Z is to be trusted, they're all performing well.
