Using the Computer but a film or youtube being played on the TV - How do I do this?

Hello everyone,

The other day I was around a friend's house and was using the laptop, he was able to browse, word process etc, do everything but had youtube playing on a separate monitor for us to watch, all using the same laptop. I assume a PC can do this.

Is it possible for me to do this on my PC with my TV? I have my TV 'hooked' up to my PC via a HDMI cable.

I would be very grateful if someone could assist me with this :)

Yup assuming your graphics card has more than one output (most do) you will be able to extend your desktop so you can essentially have two separate spaces one on your monitor (to browse, word process etc.) and one to watch youtube (etc.)

How do I go about doing that?

I took a picture of the back of my graphics card. I'm using the empty port on my left to use with the TV.

I just realised when I tried putting the cable in the port to the right that is a different type of port? What type of port is that?

(I'm also hoping it will fit because it looks like the top part might be in the way)

What graphics card is it? Is it a fairly new one? Could be a DisplayPort... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

But to answer the question, plug your PC into your monitor using a DVI and then run a HDMI cable from your PC to TV. Set up the TV as your secondary monitor in control panel and voila :) When you're not using the tv just press windows + P and set it to 'Computer Only' or 'Extend' when you want to use the secondary display.
