VORTEX IV 17" - Sound not available through side jack

I plug external speakers on nay of the side jacks, the laptop recognises the jack and asks me what I just plugged in (or out), but there is no sound coming out. Am I missing something or is the laptop broken?

Only one of the jacks is audio out, the one closest to the front. Plug in then make sure it's the output and volume isn't muted.

Well, of course, not that you said it it works. I am sure I tried all the jacks last evening and it did not work. Anyway, thanks!
