Vortex IV Temperatures Vs Fans working

Hi,

I'm not reporting a problem, just a bit of a query.

I've noticed that when I leave my laptop alone and its CPU usage goes down to nearly zero, the fan isn't running. As soon as I start doing anything like a virus scan or copying a few Gig of data to/from different drives (basically enough to get the CPU usage into double figures) the fans kick in very quickly. Despite the fact that there's no real evidence that they needed to. It's like they're directly linked to CPU usage rather than any temperature sensors. I'd prefer that they kick in when they feel the temperatures getting above the normal range and they run until it gets well back into the normal range.

What control do we have over fan policy? I noticed a fans setting in the power management, where I changed it to passive, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.

I'm perfectly happy to live with it working this way, but I'd prefer it if it didn't.

Also, while I'm here, at what temperature range would I start to get concerned, and perhaps bring over a desktop fan pointed at the machine to cool it down? For the first few weeks of usage I'm gonna keep an eye on the temps to see what impact different activities (e.g. video conversion, backup, etc) have on the temps. Here are the temps I just recorded while Avast was doing a full scan, in a 25.3ºC room.

I've got the same chassis and have similar experience with the fans. Like you say, it does seem they react to CPU usage, perhaps to further increase cooling potential, but who knows. There may be a third party app that will let you further control fan speeds, but someone else will have to guide you on that...

Regarding temps, the cpu will start throttling around 100C. You don't want it to be up this high, but that's where it can spike to if it needs. Under intensive operation, I'd like to see it raised to around mid to high 80's, perhaps early 90's if prolonged, but certainly no higher.

Can't find the max threshold for the GTX870m, but mine in an intensive game like Crysis3 gets to around 88C and ambles at around 40C I think.

If you wanna test your temps thoroughly, may be worth running Prime95 for CPU and Furmark for graphics whilst monitoring. If HWMonitor doesn't display your graphics (didn't on mine with the same card for some reason), there's speccy by Piriform.

P.S... after a lot of recommendations, I shelled out for a decent Laptop cooler to further lower temps (only by perhaps 5 degrees, but does make a difference).

I don't hit the graphics card hard so I'm not concerned about that, not a gamer.

I'll look out for them if I start seeing any concerning temps. I haven't properly switched over to the new laptop yet, so haven't really done anything challenging on it.

What temperatures were you seeing, and on what components, that made you think you needed to lower your temps? Was it only when gaming hard that you needed it?

Yeah, it was only really for gaming. I'm a big believer in lower temps prolonging the life of a pc so have always gone over the top with cooling, but as a result I've never had a component fail.

After watching this video I was hoping I could use SpeedFan to automatically control fan speeds based on a temperature chart of sensor temps rather than CPU usage. Sadly, although SF found all the temperature sensors it needed, it couldn't find any controllable fans :(

Back to this thread. Wow, I didn't realise it's already 2 years and 3 months since I got this machine. That's enough for me to seriously think about ditching this thing and getting something that's quiet. But before I do ...

has anyone found any fan replacements for a Vortex IV ? Ones that don't sound like white noise generators turned up to 11. My first attempt at reducing fan volume and temps was to turn off Turbo boost, which is as simple as changing the on-power (not battery) settings so that the CPU can only go up to 99% rather than 100%. At 100% it will overclock/boost even if you're not needing it, and the temps get crazy. Sadly that wasn't enough for long enough, so I ended up reducing the CPU max usage to 50%. That's also not even enough. I'm currently running at around 90% idle on the CPU and temps are mid 60's celsius in a 22 celsius room. That ain't right.

I've gotten myself an Intel NUC mini PC with an i3 and I now control that remotely and let it do tasks like video conversion because this i7 simply can't do it without making unacceptable fan noises. Sad to say that I'll be avoiding PC Specialist like the plague when I get my next machine.

Have you cleaned yours since you've had it? I mean taking it apart and blasting the cooling lanes and fans to free of dust? If not, that'll be why your temps are so high, they shouldn't be. Mines still high 30s idling but I clean it every 6 months.

I'll give that a try at the weekend. Thanks.
