We've already had our best Christmas gift, we got him 10 days ago. His name is Rudy and he's a 5-year old rescue basset hound from Athens. He only spoke Greek when we got him but his English is coming along well! He's the fourth basset we've homed so we know exactly what we're taking on....

Hush puppy! I got one rescue dog and trying to convince the missus to get a 2nd one. Is he settling well in the boat?

You only like Bassets cos the short legs make them more stable on the boat and the ears can be easily secured around a mast in storm conditions :p

I love dogs but there's always been something about bassets that gives me the creeps, they always seem to have this eye rolling look of utter disdain, as if they're permanently thinking "oh for crying out loud will this guy ever shut up" LOL.

Yes he is, surprisingly well. We had some strongish winds the other night so the boat was moving around a bit at her moorings and I could see him wondering why the ground was moving. He also fell in to the marina for the first time two days ago. At least we now know he can swim....

Good idea that, I hadn't thought of it!

They are very independent dogs and they have selective hearing. You can almost see them thinking "yes, I hear you calling but this smell is SO much more important".

He's an absolute joy, where he was in Athens he was left alone all day, bassets in particular hate that, they are very social dogs. He knows he's fallen into clover with us by now though, we're with him all the time, he gets lots of walks every day, and in the countryside (I bet he never saw that in Athens). It's clear he's decided he's our dog. I took him off the lead today for the first time on the big sandy beach near here so he could run with some other dogs there and he even came when I called him - twice! That's pretty much unheard of for a basset.
