I don't know what the little show desktop button is but Windows key (the thing between ctrl and alt) + D gets you to the desktop from just about anywhere.

Windows 8.1 uses the "Aero peek" feature that was introduced in Windows 7 in order to show the desktop, there is no "show desktop" icon in Windows 7/8/8.1.

To enable Aero peek open the Control Panel and click on the Personalise icon (or right-click on an empty bit of the desktop and select Personalise from the menu that's shown). In the Personalise window click on the Taskbar and Navigation menu item at the bottom left. In the dialog box that opens make sure the "Use peek to preview the desktop...." box is checked and click OK.

Now, to show the desktop you simply move the mouse cursor to the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and all open windows will disappear showing only the desktop.

Maybe he is after the actual icon of the PC on his Desktop?

Maybe right-click on your Desktop (empty space) -> pick Personalize -> change Desktop icons -> select Computer -> Apply.

This should give you back your Computer icon back on your Desktop. It's hard to figure out what you are after :)

And just to add to ubuysa's reply, you can also simply click the bottom-right of the screen, and it will show the desktop (i.e., same behiaviour as in Vista and earlier, rather than just "peeking" temporarily).

I believe this is the button he is trying to find (located at the right of the taskbar)

In default Win8.1 the button is still there just doesn't look like a button, but clicking/hovering over on the same spot does the same thing as mdwh said.

The desktop 'button' is indeed the little sliver on the far right of the taskbar. But an invisible sliver is not an icon, and the OP wants an icon.

Well you learn something every day. I knew about hovering over that "button" of course but I have never (not since I first had Vista) tried clicking on it. Thank you!

There's nothing like finding something obvious that you've missed to make you realise you don't actually know everything.
