Windows on SSD, x86 on HDD

Hi everyone.

Just recieved my new PCS PC :) havent really broken it in yet, but it starts up OK lol

First thing I noticed is that my windows installation is on my SSD, which is as expected. However, the default address for any programs I install will now be c:\program files(x86), and I would rather install everything else on my HDD. Can this be done? Would you advise it if so?

Thanks for any help

Thanks steaky360.

Does anyone have any input on why (apart from screwing with the registry) this may be a good/bad idea? I want to keep the SSD for windows and essentials as much as possible to preserve the SSD, or am I being overly careful here? I don't have much space for programs on it anyway. And what about some programs requiring an install in the (x86) folder? This is beyond my knowledge...

I would say you are being overly careful, there is no reason not to store stuff on the SSD unless its full really. For most home users the SSD will last longer than some mechanical harddrives. PErsonally I store my games etc. on mechanical harddrives and most other stuff on my SSD (a few games are on there but I've never noticed a massive difference in loading times etc.).

I completely agree with steaky360, you want Windows and your programs on the SSD if you are to feel the full benefit of it. The wear level of SSDs is enormous these days and you need have no fear of wearing it out.

Assuming you have at least 8GB of RAM you might consider moving the paging file off the SSD on to your hard disk, that's not the best place for it when used as pageable memory of course but with at least 8GB of RAM you'll almost never use it for that. You do want to keep a paging file for dumps etc. and the HDD is fine for those kinds of things. That will free a big chunk of SSD space for you. You might also consider turning hibernation off if you don't use it, that will also save a big chunk of SSD space for you.
