Heatsink Compatibility

Hi Folks

Have recently bought a new desktop containing a Crucial T705 1TB SSD (M.2_1). I know these tend to run hot. Mine is operating at 58-62C under most conditions. It’s within normal bounds, but it would be nice to cool it down a bit.

My MB is an ASUS Crosshair X870E Hero and I also have a Corsair MP600 SSD (M.2_4) and an EVGA GTX 2080 Super.

I’m looking at a Thermalright HR10 2280 PRO Black SSD Cooler.

Has anyone successfully used one of these on this MB without needing to modify it or the MB?

Obviously, the T705 needs to be in one of the Gen 5 slots (M.2_1, M.2,_2 M.2_3) and using M.2_3 would compromise the performance of the PCIe slot that houses the GPU. So that leaves M.2_1 (where it is currently installed) or M.2_2.

I’ve not done this sort of thing before so would also be interested to know whether I need to change the thermal pad and where best to attach the heatsink fan to provide it with power. Will it be controllable using iCUE? I don’t have Armoury Crate installed (it was a disaster when I tried it).

Thanks in hopeful anticipation.

Simon

I just used the standard Crucial heatsink with mine...and it fits fine in M2_1 on an X670E motherboard.

It hit a max of 60ºc after 4 hours of gaming (ranges from 55-60ºc normally)...but my games are running from another SSD in another slot - the Crucial drive is just for Windows/applications/games launchers, so isn't heavily used during gaming sessions.

My Steam drive where the game is installed (a 4TB Crucial P3 using just the built-in motherboard cooling plate) is running at no more than 40ºc (range of 32-46ºc).

Thanks, TonyCarter. There are numerous complaints on the internet that a rookie design error on the X870E means that aftermarket heatsinks are likely to clip the VRM if they are not low profile.

Ah, I see.

A bit of trial and error required then...as my X670E probably won't be identical.

Yes, it will be trial and error … unless somebody has fitted an HR10 Pro to a T705 on an X870E. I thought it was worth asking, just in case. Thanks for the input.
