GPU not performing as expected!

Okay so I've just recently bought and installed my new GTX 770 4GB, however it didn't give me the performance boost I expected.

I'm in the process of upgrading my computer over the next few months bit by bit, this being the first of the upgrades as my old GTX 460 wasn't really pulling its weight. However after installing the new 770 I've only noticed a frame increase of roughly 20fps in games such as battlefield and arma3. I was expecting my frames to be WAY higher than this, even with the slightly dated other hardware in my computer.

Currently my specs are as follows:

Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-950 (3.07GHz)
Motherboard ASUS® P6X58D-E: DDR3, USB 3.0, SATA 6.0GB/s, 3-Way SLI
Memory (RAM) 6GB SAMSUNG DDR3 TRI-DDR3 1333MHz (3 X 2GB)
Graphics Card 4GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX770 GDDR5
Memory 640GB SERIAL ATA 3-Gb/s HARD DRIVE WITH 16MB CACHE (7,200rpm)
Power Supply & Case Cooling CORSAIR 850W PSU (TX850) 80+ ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling TITAN FENRIR EXTREME DIRECT TOUCH COPPER CPU COOLER
Sound Card ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)

Am I being unrealistic to expect this machine to perform much better than before the GPU upgrade? I understand the CPU is dated and my Motherboard isn't exactly the best but surely I should be seeing a much greater frame increase than I have done?

At the moment I suspect my CPU is bottle necking the GPU however I've no idea how to prove this. If this isn't the problem then what can be causing the poor frame rate?

As I've said I'm in the process of upgrading and was planning on buying a new hard drive next, however with the poor frames I've been thinking of re-planning the upgrade to buy a new CPU and as a result a new motherboard to mount the CPU onto. Is this a wise idea? will this solve my frame rate issue?

Any help/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

What FPS are you getting?

When I first got my 144hz monitor I was checking my fps to see what I was getting and I was repeatedly only getting 60 fps. I went onto Nvidia control panel, went to change resolution and there is a drop down menu labeled refresh rate. For some reason this menu was limiting my fps to 60hz. I changed it to 144hz and now it works as it should.

Did you try a clean installation of NVidia drivers?

I'm getting between 50-70 on BF3 which is only an increase of roughly 20 fps from my old gtx 460.

Just had a look at this, I only have 60hz available for both my screens, no 144hz option :(

I uninstalled all the drivers before taking out my old card. Popped the new card in, let it install drivers then went onto the website and got the latest drivers installed. Did I miss anything?

Unless you have a monitor that does over 60Hz you will not be able to get above 60Hz, a lot of monitors are still only 60Hz

Edit: too slow, I got distracted mid-posting.

Like Rakk said, you won't get higher fps than what your monitor will handle. I wouldn't worry about fps around 50-70fps.
I'm sure when it needs to work harder it will be fine.

As an FYI I just played a game of BF3 to see what FPS I was getting, it was between 70 - 120. If you had an expensive gaming monitor (120hz +) I would expect your rig to outperform mine on games.

Load up BF3, play a little then open task manager or something to monitor the CPU usage while bf3 runs in the background and see if its maxing out the CPU. I doubt that CPU would be bottlenecking BF3, I have an i5 2500 and a 7870 and I'm getting a FPS in the same kind of region as you.

What happens if you play on minimum? Does the frame rate increase substantially?

Here's the screenshot for my CPU usage whilst playing BF3. Seems to suggest its not the CPU that's the cause.

Can't help notice that my mem usage is nearly at full, would that have any effect on my frames/performance?

That CPU is not bottlenecking anything, the RAM is fine too. It still has about 1GB left, if it was bottlenecking then you wouldn't have any spare.

Seems that message you get at the start of BF3 might be common, seems to be a few people getting it. Have a look on Google and you will see. I would see what kind of FPS you get on lower settings, just lower them gradually and see if you get a smooth increases in FPS.

Even on ultra I would be expecting about 90 FPS average on a 770. Im presuming you are gaming at 1080p?

Yeah im playin at 1080p, played around with resolutions a bit to try and increase the frame rate but still not much difference. I was expecting to be able to play most games on high/ultra with a good steady fps when i got the card, haven't seen that at all yet though :(

With v-sync or adaptive v-sync on then you will not see the frames increase over your monitor's refresh rate (in this case 60hz). If you want to really see your card excel, then you will need to buy a better monitor with a higher refresh rate (120hz+) or even look into triple monitor gaming.

A 4gb 770 is a tad overkill for a single 60hz monitor at 1080p as you won't see any increase over 60fps. It should still be better than your old card though as you should be able to turn settings onto max that you couldn't in the past.

Yeah i tried with adaptive v-sync enabled and it just capped my fps at 60. I'll maybe look into buying a new monitor in that case! I'm already running two so adding another would take me up to three monitors
