it would be much appreciated if anybody could point me in the right direction as it would save me about £200

On a general note, I was completely unaware that any form of school entitled anyone to VAT exemption. As to PCS, afaik technically you have to pay the full amount, and then claim the VAT back by means which would depend on your situation (forces, work etc).

I would Google VAT exemptions, but that would be well, effort :)

Generally you can only get VAT exemption on PC's bought for business uses, or if you are in the armed forces abroad - maybe a few other ways that I don't know about.

You will not be able to claim VAT back on a PC bought for gaming, that's against the rules set out by the government as to who doesn't have to pay VAT.

yes but thats music gear, not what is probably going to be a gaming computer, a school would most likely get VAT back on their own PCs but not on students, as the government would just lose too much money

just found this on hmrc website
''Education, vocational training, research and other connected services provided by an eligible body like a school, college or university=exempt''
ill see how I could claim vat back via school then as long as it is a (cough) schoolwork desktop (''Mr. Watson, what GCSE do you need 8gb of ram, an I7 cpu, a 2gb gpu and a 200gb ssd for???);)

You can only get VAT free music stuff from your school because it would be classed as an educational tool. You would have to be attending regular tuition from the school or an approved instructor to qualify.

You wont be able to claim computers VAT free, the only way for you to claim the VAT back would be to register as a business with HMRC and claim it back as a business expence.

You do realise it probably counts as fraud if you try and claim VAT back on something that is not eligible to receive it, and its costing all us taxpayers money .......

I suppose it would technically be fraud, or more probably attempted fraud. No way in hell is he ever going to get anywhere near getting the VAT back. Short of setting himself up as a business of some sort it's not happening.

Alright thanks guys, you've totally convinced me I'm not going to get vat exemption at all, unless i want to start my own business (i'm 14) or get done for fraud. what a great idea of me ;)

NO harm in asking though, you could also move to the channel islands, as that gets you a VAT free price. However i think that will also cause other problems.

If the PC is for educational use and you can prove this, and the school agree that you need it for that purpose then I believe it is legal for you to purchase it vat exempt through the schools IT department. However, if the computer is to be used for anything other than educational use, or is specced above the spec needed to perform such work then thats where you get into trouble.

For graphic design im guessing a skyfire quad core 2.2ghz 8gb ram and ssd is over spec im guessing?

Pretty much the only way you could save VAT is to donate money to the school and for the school to then decide to use that money to buy the computer. Of course that would mean the school would end up owning the computer and not you, which probably isn't what you had in mind...

There is a scheme whereby pupils can buy laptops required for and used in lessons through the scool to save VAT but from the sounds of things this won't be appropriate either. There is also a similar scheme for musical instruments (which you mentioned earlier).
